Spelling Contract
Complete any combination of activities listed below using the words you missed from the spelling pretest. If you got all of your words correct on the pretest, you do not have to complete a Spelling Contract for the week.
v Write the heading on each page you turn in (your name, number and the date).
v Write neatly and always turn in your best work.
v Staple all sheets together.
v Include your spelling pretest when you turn in your contract.
v All oral activities must have an adult signature.
v All activities within a week must be different.
v Completed contracts are due on Thursday before the spelling test.
v Write the number and value of each activity on your paper.
v You must complete 50 points to earn a 100%.
v If you have an idea that is not on the list, talk it over with me and we will decide together how many points it is worth.
5 Point Activities
1. Write the words and circle all of the vowels or underline the consonants.
2. Write the words using red for vowels and black for consonants.
3. Write the words using all different colors.
4. Type your words on the computer using different fonts and/or colors. Don’t forget to print it out and turn it in!
5. Spell words in sand. Adult signature required.
6. Spell words in dry Jello or pudding. If you get the word right, treat yourself to a lick! Adult signature required.
7. Spell the word with a flashlight in a dark room. Adult signature required.
8. Write each word with a water bottle or chalk on the sidewalk. Adult signature required.
9. Organize and write the words in reverse alphabetical order (Z-A).
10 Point Activities
10. Write the words and cross out the silent letters.
11. Spell the words with shaving cream or whipped cream. Adult signature required.
12. Bend pipe cleaners to form each letter in the word. Adult signature required.
13. Say the word, then spell out the letters of the word while beating a drum (or other hard surface an adult says it’s ok to beat on J). Adult signature required.
14. Say and spell the word while throwing a ball to a partner. Adult signature required.
15. Say and spell the word into a tape recorder. Check yourself by listening to your recording. Adult signature required.
16. Write each word with the opposite hand you write with. (So if you’re left-handed, use your right.)
17. Print each word. Next to it, write the word in your best cursive.
18. Scramble the letters in each word. Write the answer next to each word.
15 Point Activities
19. Study the words for 20 minutes at home. Adult signature required.
20. Take a practice test at home. Write any missed word 3 times each. Don’t forget to turn in your practice!
21. Write each word and divide it into syllables. Use a dictionary to help you if you need to.
22. Use each word in a sentence. Combining multiple words in sentences to make them complete, logical sentences is acceptable. Circle all spelling words.
23. Write the words 3 times in your neatest cursive.
24. Write a word triangle for each spelling word.

20 Point Activities
25. Classify each word as a noun, pronoun, verb or adjective.
26. Draw and color a picture. “Hide” the words in the picture, but make sure not to color over the words so I can see them!
27. Write each word and next to it write the phonetic spelling. Use a dictionary to help you if you need it.
28. Make flashcards for the words. Write the word on the front and the definition on the back. You may use index cards or paper for this. Use the flashcards to practice and don’t forget to turn them in.
29. Put each word on two separate cards. Place all cards upside down and play concentration.
30 Point Activities
30. Use each word in a sentence. Include at least one declarative (makes a statement), interrogative (asks a question), imperative (demands something) and an exclamatory (shows strong expression) sentence. (This means minimum of 4 sentences.)
31. Write tongue twisters with the words.
32. Write the words on index cards. Group the words using specific characteristics such as number of vowels or consonants, syllables, vowel sounds, etc. Have another person read over the groups and try to guess the category. Adult signature required.
33. Find the words in newspapers and magazines and make a collage.
34. Write a poem (any type) using the words.
35. Make AND complete a word search (handwritten or by using puzzlemaker.com).
36. Create a code for each word. Don’t forget to include a key to the code.
Ex: *=a $=b %=c ?=d &=e
(and so on for the rest of the alphabet) so, $&?=bed
40 Point Activities
37. Make AND complete a crossword puzzle (handwritten or by using puzzlemaker.com).
38. Create greeting card messages using your words. Make a greeting card using your favorite message that you made up. Don’t forget to turn in the various messages and your final product!
39. Create a neat and nice looking advertisement using your words.
40. Write or type a story using your words. Circle the words within your story.
41. Write each word one time. Write an antonym for that word next to it and use the antonym in a sentence.
42. Write each word one time. Write a synonym for that word next to it and use the synonym in a sentence.
43. Use your spelling words and write math problems about what you are learning in math class.
44. Write a letter to me about what you are learning in social studies or science using your words. Don’t forget to write in the correct letter format!
45. Make up a riddle for each word.
46. Create an original spelling game to help you practice your words. Don’t forget to write out the directions. You must play the game, too! Adult signature required.
47. Print each word. What do you think the definition is? Write it down. Now, look up the word in a dictionary and find the actual definition. If you are wrong, write the new definition, if you are correct, but a * in that column. This activity should be done in three columns, looking like:
